Meet DJ Nu Kicks

How did you get started as a DJ?

When the Covid-19 pandemic began, I was working in IT, building cloud infrastructures for the government. The shift to remote work allowed me to rest from burning out, while being able to try new things. I started a podcast called “P Just Kickin It” dedicated to my favorite things, sneakers and music, inspired by my favorite female group Xscape, their song, Just Kick It.

With encouragement from my wife, I explored DJing and fell in love with it. Now, I’m pursuing a full-time career as a DJ.

Where do you go for inspiration?

I go to the water. Oh My God. I can talk to God, Cry it out, I can release and relax. I also meditate. At the end of 2023 I was introduced to meditation by a therapist and it has been a game changer for me.

If you could tour with one artist from past or present as their DJ, who would that be and why?

Killer Mike! that is who I would tour with! He is my favorite rapper right now.
He just took off and I love his music!

What’s the theme song to your life?

It would be Higher Level by Killer Mike!
That’s my song!

What’s a must have item in your DJ bag that someone might find surprising?

Cologne – definitely cologne.

Trident Gum (blue pack)

The cologne because sometimes I start sweating and I never, ever, ever, ever, like to not smell pleasant. Whatever the scent for the night is, that is what’s in my bag.

What’s one piece of advice you wish you would have received when you first started DJing?

Just Do You.
I met this one DJ veteran and honestly he was super hard on me about getting it right, being perfect, knowing your history this and that, and honestly that is needed but the right connection, your dedication, your own style is all that really matters.
